Some years trudge past with few to no fantasy films and those of us who live for such things suffer the disappointment by putting frowny faces on everything, or simply re-reading The Hobbit. Recently, though, it seems that fantasy has had a huge comeback in Hollywood—and whether or not Harry Potter and Twilight (gag) are to blame for this, I don’t know, but I sure am thankful for it, as are many of my fellow fantasy geeks.
I have been following the Hunger Games film news like an obsessed teenager, but it turns out that there are plenty of other films to be insanely excited about in the upcoming year as well. From two (count them, two!) Snow White films to Pixar’s first leading female role (albeit a princess role, which I say shouldn’t really count), we have enough fantasy in 2012 for a whole year! So the world better not end—especially before I get to see Snow White and the Huntsman in December. (Although I don’t know why Kristen Stewart is playing Snow White; isn’t she supposed to be the fairest of them all? Still, it’s got to be better than Twilight—and I actually do like her in other films.)
Early in 2012, we have Dr. Seuess’s The Lorax, which may be my favorite of his books. The sequel to Ghost Rider is also playing early in 2012, as is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Another sequel, this one to the Journey to the Center of the Earth film, will be playing in January of 2012.
For summer moviegoers, there will be plenty to enjoy next year as well. Everyone’s favorite zombie book, Abraham Lincoln: Zombie Killer, will be playing, as will The Amazing Spider-Man. The eagerly-awaited final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, will also be out next summer. Other 2012 fantasies that we have to look forward to include The Hobbit, Jack the Giant Killer, and Wrath of the Titans.
Though a release date has not yet been given, the film adaptation of Fragile Eternity is supposed to be made in 2012, too. Fans of the Mortal Instruments series are well aware of the fact that the movie adaptation of the first book, City of Bones, is also set to premiere in 2012. And—must I mention it again?—the final Twilight movie will be playing at the end of the year as well.
The great thing is that there are likely even more movies than I’ve listed; these are only the ones that A. have release dates scheduled or B. I was following already. Fans of Septimus Heap are also aware that Warner Brothers has promised to start on that series once Harry Potter was over, so we’ve got our fingers crossed that that will be coming soon, too. I’ve also heard movies about a Percy Jackson sequel being filmed, but since the films were perhaps the most awful adaptations of a book that I’ve ever seen (and that’s saying a lot), I’m not even sure if that’s worthy of mentioning. Who knows? Maybe they’ll get it right this time. But as big of a PJ fan as I am, I’d much rather see an adaptation of the second His Dark Materials installment instead of seeing Percy and friends butchered once again by a horrible, completely non-canon script.
