You’ll have to excuse me while I compose myself; I feel like one of those girls at a Twilight opening. Listen up, all of you Neil Gaiman fans out there: American Gods, only one of the best books written of all time, is being made into a movie. Or a miniseries. Or a full series. The important thing is that HBO is going to air a live adaptation of Shadow & Co. doing what they do best—having surreal, eerie, and bizarre mythological adventures in our modern-day world.
Swoon.
Shadow is hands-down my favorite Gaiman character and I cannot wait to see him on screen, though I do have the fear, as I always do when a book is adapted into a film, that my heart could be ripped through my chest with a poor portrayal. (Note to directors and producers: please just don’t use the guy who played Gordon on Supernatural, as my childish heart will not be able to separate him from the psycho guy he became.)
Then again, I’ve never been disappointed with a Gaiman adaptation; in fact, both Stardust and Coraline are among my favorite movies (big surprise there). We even have a road named Stardust in our town and every time we drive by it my husband and I—as we spent our anniversary one year seeing the film in theaters and often pop the DVD in while we’re working or studying nowadays—recite random quotes from the movie. Yes, we are total Gaiman heads; in fact, I’m disappointed that there isn’t a specific term for people like us, who have this condition.
Anyway, as fantastic and wild as Stardust was, American Gods is definitely even wilder, and I’m anxious to see how it’s going to be done. I have to admit I’d much rather it were a big film released in theaters that we could go see (maybe on our anniversary again?) but I will so take what I can get.
In related news, the book is being re-released this summer with some added scenes that Gaiman cut from the first release. Do I have to have it? Absolutely. Silly question. I wonder if it’s going to include the short story about Shadow that was included in Fragile Things (also incredible; if you haven’t read it yet, you must!)? If so, that would be cool, but I’d love to read more about Shadow that I haven’t yet. In fact, if Neil just wanted to, say, create a whole series, or a new comic, or even a daily Twitter post, about Shadow, I’d definitely be all over that. Something more about Silas of The Graveyard Book would be pretty awesome as well…
